The British Canoeing Awarding Body Open Water Canoe Leader Award is for people wanting to lead Safe, Enjoyable and Engaging trips on Moderate Open Water (Up to 500m from shore and winds up to force 4) in Canoe.
This 2-day training course is aimed at experienced open canoeists, it looks at all aspects of leadership that are assessed on the BCAB Open Water Canoe Leader award including:
Personal Solo Canoe Skills on open water,
Participant Focused Leadership,
Safety, Rescue and incident management,
Underpinning Background Knowledge, Understanding and Experience to prepare candidates for assessment.
The cost includes the course, launching fees for Chichester Harbour, Paddle UK credential fees and use of Rock River Coaching’s Boats. We endeavour to tailor the programme to candidates previous experience and the conditions and venues on the day. You need to be a confident flat water canoe paddler with experience of paddling in windy conditions, whilst there is no award pre-requisite, the Progressive Canoe Personal Performance award is a good benchmark.
The course runs 09:00-17:30 both days.
Venue and exact plan will depend on the weather.
The Paddlesport Safety and Rescue course aims to provide paddlers with the key safety and rescue skills required to operate safely and to be able to deal with common emergencies with common paddlesport craft from your chosen craft. Helping them to build confidence towards independence.
There is 6 hours of learning time on the course, the majority will be practical and on the water. Dress to get wet!
The Sheltered Water Coach Award is designed for people whose core function is to coach paddlers who want to gain/improve skills in Canoe or Kayak on slow moving rivers and open water up to 200m from shore.
Please note: This is the Discipline Specific Training course and you must have attended the Core Coach Training prior to attending this course.
The Coach Award is designed for people whose core function is to coach paddlers who want to gain/improve. The Core Coach Training is the start point of the award looking at the Fundamentals of coaching Paddlesports across all disciplines from Sheltered water SUP to Slalom.
The Sheltered Water SUP Coach Award is designed for people whose core function is to coach paddlers who want to gain/improve paddleboard skills on slow moving rivers and open water up to 200m from shore.

The Paddlesport Leader is aimed at paddlers who wish to lead groups of mixed craft on both wind affected lakes and slow moving sheltered water rivers.
The award goes beyond “just taking people for a paddle” and focuses on leading Safe, Enjoyable and Engaging trips that help to develop paddles understanding, confidence and competence towards becoming independent paddlers.
Topics we cover include: Understanding your paddlers needs; planning safe and engaging journeys; group management; participant focused, empowering leadership and decision making; tips to help paddlers develop; Rescues and incident management; personal paddling skills across different craft.
The award allows you lead mixed fleet or single craft journeys from any craft that you have competence in for the planned journey.
The training is followed by a period of consolidation and a 1-day assessment. The assessment can be done in a single type of craft.
The Paddlesport Leader is the next award up from the Paddlesport Instructor and allows holders to “Self-Deploy”. It is ideal for those wanting to lead paddling trips and experiences, DofE, Clubs paddles and youth groups.
Pre requisites: Current Paddle UK member, 18 years old, competent and experienced flat water paddler.
